EMBRACE MUSIC WHILE SWIRLING AROUND IN YOUR LIVES WITH KIDS:

Encourage ability and focus on strengths; encourage kids to take risks and understand what they can do. Amazing things happen when kids practice self acceptance and realize the beautiful potential that lives inside of them. 

I could suggest many inspirational songs here but maybe this is something to explore. How does music engage you? How does music compel you to explore different aspects of who you are? Is there a song that creates inspiration for you to explore possibility?  Ask kids. Often the music that they like is appealing because it exudes a vibe through rhythmic or melodic appeal, it's not necessarily because they connect to the lyrics. 

EVERYONE:

-I can use movement to show musical form.

-I can improvise movement to show beat.

-I can sing as part of a unison group sound.

All groups worked on fundamentals this week to reinforce rhythmic awareness, understanding of form and tuneful singing. Most importantly, we focused on connecting through music and appreciating the joy that is gifted to us through making music as a group.

  Learning Intentions (Everyone): I can perform simple action songs and singing games; I can move, demonstrating awareness of others, to show beat in a manner that is appropriate to psychomotor development. Students spent their first music classes familiarizing themselves with the music room routines and with each other. September 22 - 26 (Music Week 4)

  Learning Intention Legend ( Blue  =  Kindergarten ,  Green  =  1 / 2 ,  Purple  =  3 / 4 ,  Red  =  5 / 6 ) -I can demonstrate steady beat through movement. -I can differentiate speaking from singing voices. Students performed silly action songs and kept beat on different parts of their bodies to reinforce rhythmic awareness. We practiced humming, whispering, speaking and singing to explore our capacity to make sound with our voices. We also sang about Pete the Cat's groovy buttons.  -I can play a steady beat using rhythm instruments. -I can perform simple action songs and singing games.  Grade 1 and 2 students continue to learn and perform a variety of silly action songs as part of their daily singing warmup. December 15 - 19 (Music week 12)

Important Dates: Winter Break December 20th - January 4th    TO SUPPORT LEARNING: Sing together; sing often; sing to inspire joy. "Don't worry that it's not good enough for anyone else to hear; just sing, sing a song." Learning Intentions:  -I can  distinguish voice sounds; differentiate singing from speaking voice -I can recognize 'like' and 'unlike' phrases / patterns; identify repetition and contrast -I can sing with expression; articulation (legato and staccato) and range of dynamics (incorporate crescendo and diminuendo) -I can respond to beat through action and simple body percussion -I can use pitch awareness for singing; extend vocal development to include phrasing, enunciation and expression Students participated in holiday singalong sessions to experience singing as a school community.
