EMBRACE MUSIC WHILE SWIRLING AROUND IN YOUR LIVES WITH KIDS:
Get into music through movement. There is music to fill a lifetime. Isn't that amazing?? This is a fun song. I could share so many...

-I can use movement to show musical form.
-I can differentiate voices - singing, speaking, whispering
Kindergarten students participated in a variety of singing and playing activities this week. We did some Rain Rain (because it was raining) but then transitioned to the theme of sunshine to explore musical form. Maybe we are responsible for the beautful mid week weather.
-I can sing using a range of dynamics from soft to loud and loud to soft.
-I can use movement to represent changes in dynamics.
We continued with singing games to use the range of dynamics in our voices and to demonstrate pitch awareness. Some kids have figured out that our singing voices allow us to be very incognito during music guessing games - singing the clue for the person who is 'it' is tricky because our friends don't have the same familiarity with our singing voices. This can be really fun!!
-I can create movement to represent form.
-I can improvise movement to show beat.
We started the week in 'create' mode with melodic patterns. Students were very concerned about what they were supposed to create - the stress to be creative was unispiring so we switched gears. Getting back to movement while listening to music seems to settle kids so we did that instead. We did some group singing followed by movement games. There were song suggestions for class playlists. People were happy creating movement to represent musical form. We all lived happily ever after. The End (for this week).
-I can respond to beat; play beat or rhythmic ositnato to rperesnt muscial form.
-I can sing as part of a group; I can listen to play with appropriate expression (tempo and dynamics) to create effective group sound.
Grade 5 / 6 students enjoyed group singing and playing this week. I was encouraged about the future of humanity when the kids told me that we should sing some songs from the past because music can be a tradition. These were their words, not mine. All of it made me happy because music can be beautifully and emotionally traditional without being uncool.
-I can move to music through jumping, marching, hopping, bouncing.
-I can differentiate speaking from singing voices.
ALP students continue to wow me with tonal memory. Many of the kids come and sing parts of the songs that they want me to sing or play. There are several students who do the beginning of Charlotte Diamond's I am a Pizza to indicate that this is what they would like to hear. This is a very old song. It seems to have made a resurgence with this group of kids - Charlotte Diamond would be so happy.
Best wishes for a good week!
Mrs. M.
