EMBRACE MUSIC WHILE SWIRLING AROUND IN YOUR LIVES WITH KIDS:

Keep singing, keep moving, keep listening to music together. We continue conversations in all classes about the essence of organized group sound. Listen for sound texture of instruments and singing voices while listening to music at home. Sometimes its easier to hear instrument layers when no vocal component is present. If you're not up for searching, here's a good one. The melodic line is beautiful.

LEARNING INTENTION LEGEND (Blue KindergartenGreen 1 / 2Purple = 3 / 4Red 5 / 6)

-I can move to beat in music through walking, running,  jumping and skipping.

-I can play steady beat to accompany singing on barred instruments.

Kindergarten students continued participation in movement activities this week to experience musical pulse and to strengthen beat awareness. We listened to a piece organized in A and B sections and then used walking and running movements to represent the contrasting sections. Students then played patterns on sticks to represent the different parts of the song.

-I can represent like and unlike patterns in music through movement.

-I can read rhythmic and melodic patterns while singing.

Grade 1 and 2 students sight read the Valentine song this week, putting beats on legs and then rhythm in clapping while singing. We experienced the half note rhythm while singing so students needed to sustain singing over 2 beats.

Students also continued to experience binary A B form through moving and singing the 'Do You Love Me?' song. Students were very enthusiastic while emphatically singing the 'No, I won't be your valentine!' phrase of the song.

-I can strum steady beat on ukulele while singing.

-I can sight read and sing melodic patterns.

Students continued sight reading while singing our song from last week. We created lyrics to represent the phrase form of the song and also sang with absolute note names. Students accompanied singing by strumming steady beat on ukuleles while playing an F chord.

-I can read and sing an 8 beat ostinato pattern.

-I can read and play a 16 beat ostinato pattern.

We started with 2 layers of our 'cover' songs. Each group learned a repeating pattern on barred instruments. We practiced playing with good technique that requires students to play gently and rhythmically while listening to others. While playing as a group, we discuss the importance of contributing to a group sound rather than trying to make individual instruments sound above all of the others. I'm thinking that I might need to steer some of these kids into the glorious world of classical opera where making sound above a huge group of orchestral instruments is a wonderful asset.

We also practiced pitch awareness through 'singing' with kazoos while reading from a musical staff. It was something unlike anything I've ever experienced before - the students were all thrilled that they were the first group of kids to provide me with this profoundly inspired musical experience.

Best wishes to everyone for a wonderful long weekend!

Mrs. McMillan
