TO SUPPORT LEARNING WHILE SWIRLING AROUND WITH KIDS:
Sing together; sing often; sing to inspire joy. "Don't worry that it's not good enough for anyone else to hear; just sing, sing a song."
Learning Intentions for ALL this week:
-I can play a steady beat using rhythm instruments; I can play simple rhythm patterns (bordun) to accompany melody.
-I can accompany singing with body percussion including (beat and rhythm patterns) and transfer to instruments
-I can recognize 'like' and 'unlike' phrases; identify repetition and contrast
-I can sing with expression; articulation (legato and staccato) and range of dynamics (incorporate crescendo and diminuendo)
-I can use a variety of instruments to create harmony; I can use pitched instruments to build chords
Students worked together in preparation for concert performances this week. Preparation for performance requires sustained effort, resiliency and lots of courage to try again. Music gifts us with opportunities to experience challenge and struggle; we learn to play and sing by trying, often again and again, using a range of strategies. In the end, effortful practice yields wonderfully, organized sound.
Thank you, families, for your willingness to participate in an extension of musical process during an evening performance in the very busy month of December. Thank you, students, for your willingness to stand up in front of a crowd without editing or filters. The beautiful part of live performance is that anything can happen. Simultaneously, the terrifying part of live performance is that anything can happen.
All of the kids demonstrated excellent courage this week through this very real experience.
May you continue to discover opportunities to find joy throughout this beautiful, wintery season.
Love from,
Mrs. McMillan
